Laptops have become an important part of our daily lives. Whether you are working from home, doing multi-destination business, or traveling, if your laptop is with you and well-conditioned, you can reach the world from anywhere. What happens to a laptop won’t turn on?
Follow the steps to fix it quickly if your laptop won’t turn on.
Step 1: Disconnect External Accessories
Disconnect all types of connected accessories, such as SD cards, USB drives, HDMI cables, etc., and try turning it on again. Sometimes display problems can happen due to external devices. If the laptop won’t turn on problem still persists, follow Step 2.
Step 2: Ensure the Power Charger & Battery
Ensuring the power is a very important step in troubleshooting a laptop won’t turn on.
- Check the lights on the power adapter (charger) to make sure your laptop’s power adapter (charger) is OK.
- Check the charging indicator lights on to make sure it is charging and the power port is working.
- Let your laptop charge from a wall electric outlet for 15-20 minutes and try to turn it on again.
- Remove the battery, connect the laptop to power source with adapter charger and on again. If the problem still persists, follow step 3
Step 3: Diagnose screen issues
If your laptop is charging properly and the battery is in good condition, it still won’t start.
- Remove any extra screens & projectors that are connected.
- If the laptop’s power button is on and sounds are coming from it while the screen is blank, turn off your room lights. In this way, you will see a very faint image on the screen in the dark.
- If you can see an image when your room lights are off, this means that your screen’s inverter has not stopped working. You should replace it.
- Another reason is that the laptop’s brightness button might be broken. It also causes the screen to show faint.
- If you can turn your laptop on but your screen is still blank, it means that the LCD panel is damaged. We recommend you replace the screen.
- Sometimes the problem is due to the graphics card; if possible, change the graphics card and try again. If the problem still persists, follow step 4.

Step 4: Boot in Safe Mode to identify Laptop Won’t Turn On
Sometimes Windows auto-updates fail or operating system crashes can cause to black-screen.
- If your laptop won’t turn on or is on a black screen, try booting it in safe mode to find the specific problem, whether it’s with the display or other hardware.
- Hold the power button of your laptop’s keyboard for 10 seconds, then immediately press the button 4 or F4 or Fn+F4 to start in Safe Mode.
Step 5: Wake Laptop’s Screen
Sometimes, your screen won’t come on after pressing the power button. So, if there is any such situation, click the Window key + P and wait a few seconds.
- It will open a window in the ‘’Project’’ pane, and here you can select presentation mode.
- Another key is Ctrl + Alt + Del. By pressing this, you will reboot your windows and laptop will turn on correctly.
Step 6: Check Hardware to Ensure why Laptop Won’t Turn On
- If you’ve already checked all the things and still are not able to turn on your laptop, check your hardware.
Sometimes, there might be an issue with the hardware. For example, RAM, graphics cards, and hard drives might stop working. That laptop won’t turn on. - In this situation, we recommend that you replace the RAM, graphics card, and hard drive one by one and find the exact problem.
